Oudtshoorn: A Must-Visit Stop Along Your Garden Route Journey
Many of our guests at Treetops Guesthouse are either winding down their adventure along the Garden Route or gearing up to embark on it. For those who choose this famous journey, you're in for a real treat - the Garden Route offers some of the most spectacular scenery and charming towns South Africa has to offer.
While the traditional Garden Route officially ends at George, we always encourage our guests not to stop there. Instead of continuing along the N2, which can become a bit monotonous, we highly recommend veering inland over the beautiful Outeniqua Mountain Pass via the N12 to the town of Oudtshoorn. Trust us, the detour is well worth it!
A Town Steeped in History
Oudtshoorn, often referred to as the "ostrich capital of the world," is a town rich in history and character. It was laid out in 1847 on the farm Hartebeesrivier and formally established as a Kerkplaats (church farm) in 1853. The town is named after Baron Pieter van Rheede van Oudtshoorn, a Dutch colonial administrator who travelled to South Africa in 1741 and was appointed Governor of the Cape in 1772. Sadly, he passed away aboard a ship returning to the Cape in 1773.
Today, Oudtshoorn is famed for its charming sandstone architecture - a legacy of the prosperous ostrich feather boom of the late 1800s. Strolling through town feels like stepping back in time, with beautifully preserved historic buildings giving you a glimpse into a grander era.

Our Recent Trip Highlights
On a recent visit to Oudtshoorn, we had the pleasure of exploring the breathtaking Swartberg Pass - an absolute must for anyone who loves scenic drives and dramatic landscapes. The sheer beauty and silence of the Karoo wilderness left us awe-struck.
We also spent an unforgettable afternoon at Highgate Ostrich Show Farm, one of the oldest and most famous ostrich farms in the area. Their guided tour lasted almost two hours and gave us a deep appreciation for these remarkable birds. We learned how every part of the ostrich is utilised - from their soft and luxurious feathers to their nutritious, low-fat meat. Watching these huge birds up close (and seeing how fast they can run!) was a true highlight of our trip.
